The Postal service has returned to normalcy

Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake said the work-to-rule campaign staged its employees yesterday was resolved with the mediation of the Minister and the distribution of mails has returned to normalcy.
He said that several Trade Unions staged a work-to-rule campaign based on a disciplinary action initiated at the Registration Division of the
Central Mail Exchange.
During a discussion held with Deputy Minister Sunil Dissanayake following the advice of Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga, agreement was
reached to expedite the inquiries with regard to the relevant workers.
As such the Trade Unions agreed to suspend their work-to-rule Campaign. As such the work has returned to normalcy. The Post Master
General said they would be able to soon clear the back-log of registered mail.

The Colombo High Court today ordered the Commissioner of Prisons to ensure the right of former Commander of the Army Parliamentarian Gen. Sarath Fonseka to his Parliamentary privileges. The order was made by the three judge bench of High Court Judges Deepali Wijesundara, W.M.P.B. Warawewa and Sulfikar Razeen when the case regarding an alleged white flag incident.
When the case was heard today the Attorney General presented to Court three CDs which include the alleged statement of Gen. Fonseka. Gen. Fonseka’s counsels were granted 45 days to inspect the CDs.
Several interlocutory orders too were issued during the proceedings. The High Court ordered the Commissioner of Prisons to make available all the facilities for Gen. Fonseka to participate in all Parliamentary sessions, all consultative and other committee meetings in Parliament, party leaders’ meetings and Parliamentary group meetings.
Also, the three bench judges decided to have daily hearings into the case from 27th September.

‘Siyatha’ comes under petrol bomb attack

‘Siyatha’ media network office at Union Place in Colombo has been attacked by an armed gang early morning today (30th). An armed gang was involved in the attack which caused extensive damage to the building. According to employees the armed gang had assaulted them and forced them to kneel down.
They later threw petrol bombs inside the office causing the fire which was later doused by the fire brigade. Police teams have been deployed to investigate the incident. Two persons have been injured and hospitalized.
Siyatha is operated by Voice of Asia Network (Pvt) Ltd and includes Siyatha FM and Vettri FM.

It was indeed disturbing that an attack had been carried out on ‘Siyatha’ media institution situated within a ‘High Security Zone’ says the owner of ‘Siyatha,’ the renowned film star Sangeetha Weeraratne.
“We don’t have any rivals. Hence, we never thought our establishment would be attacked this way. Moreover, we are surprised that such an attack had been carried out in a ‘High Security Zone,’ she said.
Speaking further Sangeetha said, “About 300 employees were very disturbed when they heard the news. However, we wouldn’t be morally disturbed due to this incident. We would rise up with all our employees.”

Police today denied the report that the driver of the LTTE leader has surrendered to Police. Police Spokesman Priyashantha Jayakody SP told news.lk that the person arrested was an LTTE suspect but not the driver of the slainTiger leader Pirabaharan. He is handicapped with one leg amputated “he is not a driver at all” he said. The Police reported the arrest of the person in Trincomalee.
The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka inscribed on World Heritage List

The World Heritage Committee holding its 34th session in Brasilia under the chairmanship of João Luiz da Silva Ferreira, today inscribed two new sites on the World Heritage List.
The new sites include 1 natural property and 1 mixed (natural and cultural) property.
The natural site is:
Sri Lanka's highlands are situated in the south-central part of the island. The property comprises the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Conservation Forest. These montane forests, where the land rises to 2,500 metres above sea-level, are home to an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, including several endangered species such as the western-purple-faced langur, the Horton Plains slender loris and the Sri Lankan leopard. The region is considered a super biodiversity hotspot.

The veteran playwright, dramatist, novelist and translator, R.R. Samarakoon, has passed away after a brief illness. He was 71.
The veteran playwright and dramatist’s creative life expands over four decades. He became most popular after ‘Kelani Palama’ which was first produced in 1978.
His first production was ‘Ledak Nethi Ledek’ in the early 60s. His ‘Ahasin Vetunu Minissu’ which was produced in 1971, received four awards at the state drama awards; two of them were for Samarakoon’s direction and script.
His ‘Gekurullo’ won the award for the best novel in the same year. The novel has been translated into Russian and Tamil and later a Sinhala film was produced based on the book.
‘Eka Kuse Upan Evun’, a novel that was published in 1994, was among Samarakooon’s most favourite books.
RR Samarakoon has been married to veteran radio announcer and actress Ramya Wanigasekara.

Sangakkara topples Sehwag to become number one

Indiaopener Virender Sehwag on Sunday lost his numero uno status after being toppled by Sri Lankacaptain Kumar Sangakkara in the latest ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen.
Sehwag has dropped to second after making 99 runs in the first innings but not batting in the second after the match ended a tame draw in Colombo last Friday.
Sangakkara, who contributed with scores of 219 and 42 not out against India in Colombo, saw him reclaim the top spot which he previously occupied in 2009.
Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar has climbed two places to take fourth position in the rankings after his impressive double century during the match.
Sangakkara’s team-mate Thilan Samaraweera has risen one place to 18th after scoring 76 not out and 10 not out, he has some work to do though if he is to climb back up to his previous highest ranking of 11th place.
SLFP(Mahajana) Wing to join UNP

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana) Wing has decided to join the UNP. Accordingly, Member of Parliament and Leader of SLFP (Mahajana) Wing, Mangala Samaraweera will obtain UNP membership on August 6 along with his supporters.
During the past elections, SLFP (M) Wing worked as an independent party. However, this party is to be dissolved after obtaining its membership with the UNP.
65,000 homeless in Colombo District

According to a survey done there are over 65, 000 homeless people currently in the Colombo District only says Jayantha Samaraweera the President of the National Housing Development Authority.
Speaking to a press briefing today Samaraweera said that it is estimated that by the year 2012 the number of homeless individuals in the island will rise to 1, 200, 000 people.
He also said that necessary measures will be taken by the authority to combat the homeless issue in the country.

Examination Dept provides round the clock service till September 03

Sri Lanka Examination Authority has commenced a round the clock service to provide assistance to those who will sit for the GCE Advanced Level Examination begins on August 09.
Over two hundred thousand school and private candidates will sit for this exam held island wide till September 03.
"Admission cards for students have been dispatched to the respective schools and to the residential addresses of the private candidates" Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe said.
He pointed out that private candidates, who had so far not received their admission cards, should immediately contact the Examination Department.
Commissioner further said that the Department would remain opened 24 hours of the day until the 3rd of next month. The national identity card or the passport is valid to consolidate the identity of candidates who are sitting the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination this year.

Sri Lanka immigration authorities instructs the passport holders to fill in the blanks provided in the inner cover of the passports when they go abroad and the Controller of Immigration and Emigration has requested the people to consider it as a requirement as this information is vital in the event of a death, an accident or misplacement.
He pointed out that this information is also important with regard to state defence. The Department of Immigration and Emigration has said that it has been observed so far the owners of the passports have not been interested in filling these blanks where the passport holder has to give details of person to contact in times of emergency.
The Immigration and Emigration officials at the Katunayake International Airport have been instructed to check these details in the passports. The Department has said that the passengers who have not provided this information in their passports may therefore face delays.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe today making a statement in parliament regarding Government Minister Mervyn Silva tying a man to a tree yesterday said that this kind of incidents will bring Sri Lanka into ill repute internationally.
Wickremasinghe added that Silva’s behavior contravene the constitution of Sri Lanka where intentional harm is brought on others and taking the law into one’s own hands.

altThe Minister of Rehabilitation & Prison Reforms DEW Gunasekera says that Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP is not in any prison, detention or rehabilitation camp that are under his Ministry.
He said this in Parliament yesterday in response to a question posed by UNP Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera. However, there were a large number of ‘Pathmanathans’ among the arrested LTTE suspects and he would be able to give a definite answer regarding KP, the present leader of the LTTE, after going through files he said.
The Minister revealed there were about 8780 LTTE suspects under detention.

About 3000 Samurdthi officials have surrounded the Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat protesting against the act of Deputy Minister Mervin Silva who tied up a Samurdhi officer to a tree on Tuesday.
The large number of Samurdhi officials stormed into the Divisional Secretariat where the incident took place on Tuesday and demanded that legal action should be taken against the loathsome Deputy Minister.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Mahajana wing leader Mangala Samaraweera obtained party membership from UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe a short while ago.
The decision to officially join the United Party was taken at a recent Mahajana wing executive assembly where they also agreed that the SLFP Mahajana wing should subsequently be dissolved.
It is also rumored that Mangala Samaraweera will be made a member of the UNP Working Committee as well as be appointed as the party’s main organizer for Matara.

Mirihana Police says they have arrested the most wanted fraudster Sakvithi Ranasinghe and his wife today. Police says he had altered his appearance at the time he was arrested in Kaduwela area.
He was accused of swindling 9,000 million rupees before he fled the country. Intelligence sources revealed his return to the country from India two months ago. Police had received more than 1400 complaints against him on swindling the money of depositors of his illegal finance company.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board says that several areas in the city of Colombo will face a water cut from 9.00 am tomorrow (07 August) to 9.00 am the following day (08 August) due to vital repair work being done.
Water supplies to Colombo Fort, Olcott Mawatha, Main Street, Janadhipathi Mawatha, Galle Road (Galle Face to Kolpity), chittampalam a gardiner Mawatha, Malay Street, Slave Island, Lotus Street and all linked byroads will be halted in the mentioned time frame.
The Water Board has also said that people should fill and store necessary water previous to the water cut in order to avoid discomfort.

The High Court of Colombo has decided to release Ms. Ashoka Tillekeratne, mother of Danuna Tillekeratne on bail. She has been accused of being connected to illegal financial dealings Danuna Tillekeratne, son-in-law of former Commander of the Army Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka, is alleged to have committed.
When the relevant case was heard the High Court of Colombo ordered to release her on Rs.10 million personal bail and Rs.1 million cash bail. She was ordered to be present in Court in December.

He doesn’t have enough money to pay the depositors says Sakwithi Ranasinghe. ‘Sakwithi’ who was arrested by the police is detained at the CID.
The Police say about 1800 complaints have been reeived agsint Abhaya Ranasinghe Arachchilage Chandana Weerakumara Ranasinghe alias Sakwithi Ranasinghe. According to information revealed so far the amount he has defrauded is nearly Rs.1040 million.
However, depositors say if Sakwithi doesn’t have money to pay the depositors the government and the President should mediate to pay them the money they lost by depositing with Sakwithi. They say this could be done by selling assets owned by Sakwithi and his wife.
Sakwithi fled the country in September, 2008 and had been teaching English in India. He had arrived in the island six months ago and it has been revealed that he had conducted English classes using the pseudonym ‘Sapumal Bandara.’
Sakwithi being able to conduct English classes is a good example how many Sri Lankans could be duped point out many academicians adding that the English lessons he conducted over the State TV media before he was suspected of fraud were full of grammatical mistakes, wrong expressions as well as bad pronunciation.
G.C.E.A/L Exam begins today in 1940 Examination Centres.

The G.C.E Advanced level examination commenced at 1,940 Examination Centers throughout the island this morning. 269,000 school and private candidates are sitting for this examination, including at Examination Centres in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Among the 269,000 candidates there are 362 candidates who are rehabilitated former LTTE cadres.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been made to provide free transport to students in the Western province. This facility will be available in the SLTB and private buses in all areas of the Western Province. The Examination Department informed that immediately after the examination is finished paper marking will be conducted at 28 Paper Marking Centres throughout the island. (niz).

Democratic People’s Front (DPF) Western Provincial Councillor and Colombo District Organiser S. Rajendran has been appointed the National Organiser of the party in place of Prabha Ganesan who crossed over to the government.
The decision was taken at a DPF political committee this morning (August 10) at the party office, said DPF General Secretary Dr. Nalliah Kumaragurubaran.
Yesterday, party chief Mano Ganesan said he had given an ultimatum of 14 days to Prabha Ganesan to distance himself from the government and rejoin the Opposition in Parliament.

Investigations already carried out by the CID have revealed that Sakvithi Ranasinghe has travelled to a large number of countries using the forged passport he had fixed.
Among the countries he had visited were Malaysia, Hong Kong and China and the forged passport he had used in these travels had not been identified by the international police either.
He had travelled to these countries during the first months of leaving to India. Sakvithi has revealed that he had tried to find out whether he could engage in any businesses in these countries.

Mervyn Silva speaking for the first time since being sacked from the Deputy Minister post said that he doesn’t need a post to work for the country. Mervyn also dispersed the protest being held to support him after addressing the protestors claiming that it was unnecessary.
Mervyn stated that if the disciplinary inquiry finds him guilty he will serve the people still.
Answering a query from journalists Mervyn said that as a person who has threats to his life and a former minister who garnered over 152,000 votes it was the government’s responsibility to protect him.

Police teargas DNA protest in Galle

Police have used teargas to disperse a protest organized in Galle by the DNA. The Democratic National Alliance organized the protest to demand the release of Rtd. Gen. MP Sarath Fonseka. Our correspondent in the area confirms that MPs Arjuna Ranatunga and Vijitha Herath participated in the protest.
The protestors have attempted to march from the Olcott statue in Galle to the town centre. Police have used teargas to disperse the march in front of the Galle Police station.

DNA MPs Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara and PC member Naleen Hewage has been arrested by Police during the protest in Galle, Police said a short while ago.
DNA sources told Ada Dernaa that during the initial protest in Galle Police has used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protest and taken in nine party members under arrest.
Further DNA claims that when the DNA MPs went to the police to lodge a complaint regarding the incident MPs Vijith Herath, Ajith Kumara and PC member Naleen Hewage had been arrested. However DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunga who also went to the police station had not been arrested.
DNA leaders remanded till 16th

It is reported that those who were arrested yesterday (12th) evening in Galle by the police including several leaders of the DNA have been remanded by the Magistrate till the 16th. 11 including General Secretary of the DNA Vijithe Herath MP, Ajith Kumara MP and Member of Southern PC Nalin Hewage were remanded after they were produced before the JMO say police.
The police allege that the Parliamentarians had come into the police station, acted aggressively and harmed property belonging to the police station. Others have been remanded on charges of damaging public property. One of the accused has been admitted to hospital with injuries received when police attacked the agitation held yesterday.
Cameras and other equipment belonging to journalists too were damaged in the attack by police and one journalist has been admitted to Karapitiya Hospital with injuries received when police attacked journalists as well.
The agitation was held in Galle yesterday by the DNA to demand the release of Gen. Sarath Fonseka, protect independency of the Judiciary and asking the government to withdraw amendments to the Constitution that endorse family rule.
Mervyn to commence new mission on errant Samurdhi officers

I haven’t stopped, I’m not hiding, claimed Former Dept. Minister Mervyn Silva who casually went about his daily rounds in Kelaniya today. Silva also stated that he has gotten to know of certain malpractices committed by Samurdhi officers and that he will track them down.
Mervyn’s deputy Minister Post was stripped by the President on August 10. His SLFP membership was cancelled and his Kelaniya SLFP organizer post was suspended pending a disciplinary inquiry into the alleged incident where he tied a Samurdhi officer to a tree for neglecting his duties.

General Sarath Fonseka found guilty and cashiered

The first Court Martial today found General (Ret.) Sarath Fonseka guilty and sentenced him for a dishonorable discharge from rank pending approval of President as Commander-in -Chief, military officials said. When an officer is cashiered, he looses the rank and all the awards honours received as a military officer.
The first Court Martial examined cases relating to General Sarath Fonseka's alleged involvement in political work while in active service.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a short while ago has authorized the verdict of the first Court Martial against General Sarath Fonseka to strip him of all military ranks, said Acting Military Spokesman Colonel Duminda Gamage.

The first court martial held its sessions from the 9th to the 13th despite this period being vacation for sections of the judiciary and amidst opposition by the counselors for Gen. Fonseka. As a result defence counsels for General Fonseka were not present at the proceedings of the first Court Martial.

A massive protest campaign was held by the JVP in Colombo today (14th) against the brutal police attack on the peaceful agitation held in Galle on the 12th demanding the release of Gen. Sarath Fonseka and calling for restoration of democracy in the island and also against the arrest of 13 participants of the agitation including General Secretary of DNA Parliamentarian Vijithe Herath.
A large number of people and leaders of the JVP including its General Secretary Tilvin Silva, former Parliamentarian Lal Kanthe and Member of Parliament for Colombo District Sunil Handunneththi participated in the agitation.
The agitation continued for more than an hour.
Water filling at Hambantota port inaugurated

Filling of water at the Hambantota harbour was inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa a short while ago.
The water filling ceremony of the Hambantota harbour, the first international harbour completely built inland is currently underway while the Sri Lanka Port Authority has given visitors the rare opportunity of stepping in to the bottom of the harbour.
The mouth of the natural harbour at Hambantota has a 22m depth. When completed, the port will have a 1.5 km long breakwater, with a minimum basin depth of 17m. The turning circle will be 600m.
DNA MPs released on bail

Democratic National Alliance (DNA) MPs Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara and Provincial Councillor Naleen Hewage have been released on Rs. 200, 000 sureties bail each a short while ago.
The three DNA members were arrested by Police following the protest in Galle on August 12 demanding the release of Former Genaral Sarath Fonseka.
The Democratic National Alliance claim that when the MPs went to the police to lodge a complaint regarding the incident MPs Vijith Herath, Ajith Kumara and PC member Naleen Hewage had been arrested.

The top-rung leadership of the United National Party (UNP) is to meet at party headquarters Sirikotha today evening. General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has informed the leadership about the meeting, said party sources.
This meeting on Tuesday is to discuss the internal issues confronted by the UNP, these sources said.
Meanwhile, the UNP had a discussion Monday where party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Karu jayasuriya, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Mangala Samaraweera, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem, Democratic People’s Front head Mano Ganesan and several others were present.
This discussion centered around how the UNP could forge ahead with other parties as a united opposition, sources said.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe a short while ago requested that all records pertaining to Former Genaral Sarath Fonseka’s first Court Martial be tabled in Parliament. This request caused loud protest from the government benches. Deputy Chairman of Committees Murugesu Chandrakumar adjourned sittings for five minutes following the commotion.
Speaking in Parliament this afternoon, Mr. Wickremesinghe said that Sarath Fonseka’s democratic rights as well as Parliamentary Privileges have been infringed by the Court martial verdict.
The first Courtmartial against Sarath Fonseka found him guilty of indulging in politics while still in service and sentenced him to be cashiered.

The Managing Director of ‘Helpgreen’ who is said to have defrauded a large number of investors for millions of rupees was arrested at Welikada yesterday (17th) by the Special Unit of Mirihana Police. The suspect had advertised over the media that he would sell plots of land with hundred teak trees for Rs.500,000.
Mirihana Police had received 20 complaints against the suspect. Mirihana Police say there could be a large number of people defrauded by the suspect and they would receive their complaints within the next few days. According to the complaints already received so far it is revealed that the amount the suspect has defrauded is about Rs.1002000000.
Courts have issued eight warrants against him, police had received several complaints against him and he had been taken before courts. However, the suspect had been avoiding courts. He was arrested yesterday by Mirihana Police on information received.
According to police investigations the suspect had defrauded a large number of people at various places including Tangalle, Anamaduwa and Anuradhapura promising them plots of land with teak trees. When those who had ‘bought’ plots of land with teak trees they found there were neither lands nor teak trees.
On questioning the suspect had said his institution had many customers and only a few of them have complained.

I will not accept the verdict of the first Court Martial, MP Sarath Fonseka said at the Parliamentary complex a short while ago. The first Court Martial convicted Sarath Fonseka, a former army chief, of meddling in politics on August 13.
The court also rescinded Fonseka’s rank and medals, he said. President Mahinda Rajapaksa authorized the verdict of the first Court Martial against Sarath Fonseka to strip him of all military ranks on August 14.
Chemical used for conservation damages Sigiri paintings

It is reported that the historical Sigiri paintings were distorted by a chemical which has been used for conservation purposes. This chemical has been used a few days ago to conserve the paintings so that white specks appeared on them with some discoloration. Accordingly six paintings have been already affected. The first ‘Randoli’ procession of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy will take place tonight. ‘Randoli’ procession will be held on five nights. This procession is called ‘Randoli’ due to golden palanquins carried in the procession.
The Esala festival of which Kandy procession is a part will end with the ‘water cutting’ ceremony held on the 25th.
Sri Lanka Railways has arranged special trains for those who travel to Kandy to witness the pageant.

The Meteorology Department warned the public yesterday of bad weather conditions in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and Galle and Matara districts.
According to Met Department Southwest monsoon has been activated with atmospheric disturbances in the vicinity of Sri Lanka. Therefore showers and thundershowers would develop over most parts of the island during the afternoon and night.
It said the rainfall in some areas might exceed 100mm, fairly strong south-westerly winds would occur especially along the Western slopes of the Central hills and temporary localized fairly strong winds would occur during thundershowers, the department said.
It also requests the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activities.
Dengue BTI release postponed

The release of the locally manufactured BTI bacteria in three selected areas of the Colombo District today has been postponed according to the Deputy Minister of Health, Mahinda Amaraweera.
Mahinada Amaraweera said that the bacteria has to be checked for any kind of side effects by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) and will be released only after they submit a full report.
The locally manufactured BTI bacteria which is designed to combat dengue mosquitoes was scheduled to be released today in three selected areas in Colomboand also next Wednesday.
Foreign specialists to examine frescos

Foreign specialists will be brought to examine the white colored stains that have occurred in the Sigiriya frescos, said Dr. Senarath Disanayake, Director General of Archaeology Department.
The Director General also said that a team of local specialists have already started inspecting the frescos and are currently running several tests at Sigiriya.
It was revealed last week that the white stains had occurred after a certain chemical was applied on the frescos. Meanwhile Dr. Senarath Disanayake took part in tour of Sigiriya yesterday to inspect the ancient paintings.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently issued an order asking that a thorough inspection be carried out on the matter and a report be submitted to him by the Ministry of National Heritage and Cultural Affairs.
IMF approves instalment of loan payment

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Sri Lanka’s economic prospects had improved markedly and it has indicated it will release the next tranche of a multi-billion dollar loan to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka originally agreed a $2.5 billion loan accord from the IMF in June last year.
Following a two week mission to the country, the body gave an upbeat assessment of Sri Lanka's economy. It said government targets for deficit reduction were on track, with taxes increasing and spending being cut.
According to IMF sources Sri Lankan government will use the money to pay for post-war reconstruction following the end of fighting with the LTTE.The head of the Sri Lankan mission Brian Aitken has said they were in a position to recommend to the IMF board approval for the next loan instalment worth over $200m. Since the third trench of the loan was made available the IMF decided to grant the loan in equal instalments.The IMF said: "Overall economic conditions are improving, and the economy is likely to show strong growth this year."

The government has decided to allow GPS (Global Positioning System) to be used by civilians. The Ministry of Defense has agreed the use of the technology by civilians.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system that provides reliable location and time information in all weather and at all times and anywhere on or near the Earth when and where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver.
The use of GPS had been banned due to the technology being used by the LTTE to locate police stations, Army camps and troop movements.

Chief Editor of ‘Lanka Irida’ and ‘Sathimeda Irida’ newspaper Chandana Sirimalwatta who had been accused of insulting the Judiciary was acquitted of all charges by the Supreme Court. The case was examined on three days and counsel representing Mr. Sirimalwatta had argued that the case could not be examined by the Supreme Court.
However, when the case came up today Mr. Sirimalwatta stated that he, the board of editors or Lanka Fast Publishers did not have any intention of insulting the Judiciary by publishing the relevant news item and the newspaper was prepared to apologize if publishing the news item implied any insult to the Judiciary.
The Supreme Court, taking into considerations the submissions presented, released Mr. Sirimalwatta on condition that an apology is published in the newspaper regarding the news item.
More mobile phone porn sites get the chop

The Battaramulla Juveniles’ Court has directed the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) to halt 107 phonographic sites accessible through mobile phones featuring local youth. This follows reports filed by the Women and Children Unit of the Police.
Earlier, several websites containing phonographic material – videos and images – were banned in Sri Lanka following investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department. Some of these had contained material featuring Sri Lankan boys and girls as well.
Authorities had pointed out that such easily accessible pornographic materials were a threat to the culture of the country.
Operation of such web sites were a violation of the Amendment to the Publication Act No. 22 of 1983 and punishable by law.
A revision in gas prices

The gas price revision which takes place every two months is scheduled to be made in the first week of next month. According to the gas companies the proposals in concern to the price revisions have been forwarded to the Consumer Affairs Authority.
According to Rimoe Saldin, the Finance Director of Shell Gas Lanka Limited the gas prices at the World Market have remained relatively low in recent times.
He also said that the Consumer Affairs Authority will deliver the final verdict after reviewing the proposals submitted by the gas companies.
Woman free of Saudi nails

A surgery to remove nails inserted into a woman’s body was carried out at Kamburupitiya Base Hospital in Matara today (27th). The doctors removed 18 of the 24 nails inserted into her body by her employer in Saudi Arabia.
Two surgeons and two anesthetics along with a 15 member medical staff were involved in the three hours long surgery to remove the nails.
The Foreign Employment Bureau states she was paid a compensation of Rs.100,000 yesterday and measures would be taken to build her a new house. The Bureau is also taking steps to translate the woman’s statement into Arabic and hand it over to the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Colombo.

A reliable internal source revealed that the President intends to offer two ministerial portfolios to Muslim Congress to get their support for the proposed constitutional amendment.

Committee concludes probe on Mervin, final report next week

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) committee appointed to inquire into the incident where former Deputy Minister Mervin Silva had allegedly tied a Samurdhi officer on to a tree, has concluded recording statements from witnesses.
The committee is in the process of compiling the final report based on these recorded statements, said a committee spokesman.
The three man commission has recorded the statement of Parliamentarian Mervin Silva as well. The final report is to be handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa within the next week

The United National Party received a copy of the proposed constitutional amendment yesterday, said UNP parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka. He further added that the party will hold discussions regarding the draft proposal today and will deliver a final verdict tomorrow.

Former Minister Lakshman Jayakody passed away this evening after a brief illness, says Director of the National Hospital in Colombo.
Lakshman Jayakody (born 24 August 1930) was a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) stalwart and was the Cabinet Minister of Buddhist Affairs in the Cabinet of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga government from 1994-2000. He was educated at Trinity College in Kandy and Ananda College in Colombo. Prior to his death Mr. Jayakody was a senior advisor to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He was also a onetime chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and is the father of western provincial councilor Chandana Jayakody.
JVP to file objections

The JVP will file objections at the Supreme Court today against the proposed 18th amendment to the constitution, JVP media unit said in a statement. The Supreme Court is to take up the bill on the government’s proposed constitutional amendments today.
The bill is to be taken up before a five-member Supreme Court bench to determine if it is consistent with the Constitution.
The JVP in their objection are scheduled to argue that due to elements contained within the amendment it cannot be passed through a Bill in parliament but only through a referendum.

The government is attempting to get the constitutional amendments passed by a two thirds majority in Parliament. It is in such a hurry to do this though the masses are suffering under so many problems, charged Tissa Attanayake addressing the media this morning (August 31).
Even though the President’s second term has not even begun the government is in a hurt to extend the term by pushing through the constitutional amendments. This goes against the wishes of the people, Mr. Attanayake said.
An important Bill like this is being brought before Parliament as an urgent Bill without even presenting them to the people. They have a right to know what the amendments are. A Saudi official has denied a Sri Lankan maid’s allegations that the couple she worked for in the Gulf kingdom hammered nails and needles into her body.
Doctors in Sri Lanka have said they removed 13 nails and five needles from L.G. Ariyawathi after she returned from Saudi Arabia last month. The items had been driven into Ariyawathi’s legs and forehead.
But Saad al-Badah, the head of a Saudi government department responsible for foreign workers, told state television Tuesday night that Ariyawathi’s allegations are baseless and amount to blackmail.
The 49-year-old Ariyawathi has said the family she worked for in Saudi Arabia punished her by heating the nails and needles before sticking them into her. She worked in the kingdom for five months.

Indonesia court orders Buddha Bar shut after complaint

The Indonesian branch of the Buddha Bar, an international chain of upmarket bars, has been ordered to close because its name caused distress to Buddhists, local media reported on Wednesday.
English language newspaper Jakarta Globe reported that Central Jakarta District Court on Wednesday ordered the owners of the bar, Nireta Vista Creative, to close down immediately.
The owners, Jakarta’s district governor, Fauzi Bowo, and the Jakarta Tourism Agency were fined a total of 1 billion rupiah ($110,700) for causing mental distress to the plaintiffs, a group called the Anti-Buddha Bar Forum.
The group had complained the bar’s name and use of Buddhist decorations and statues was a form of blasphemy.
Jakarta’s governor and the tourism agency were fined because, by allowing the bar’s development, they “failed to consider the religious and cultural development in the society and ended up offending them,” said Judge F.X. Jiwo Santoso.
A lawyer for the bar owners said they would appeal.

Child kidnapper dies in police shooting

The main suspect of a child kidnapping incident in the area of Sapugaskanda has succumbed to his injuries after being shot by police officers. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakodysaid that the suspect was shot at when he had attempted to throw a hand grenade at police officers.
The incident had taken place at Kadawatha when the suspect after his arrest had accompanied several police officers to reveal a location where he had allegedly buried a batch of grenades.
The 9 year old child was abducted on 31 August at Sapugaskanda and was later found alive by police in the vicinity of Thalathuoya,Kandy. According to the complaint made by the child’s father at the Sapugaskanda police the kidnapper had demanded a ransom of Rs.800, 000 for the safe return of the child.
However it was later revealed that the kidnapper was an employee of the abducted child’s father.

According to the report Corruption Investigation Unit has paid attention to the action of this player since 20/20 Cricket World Cup Trophy which was held in England last year. During this series this player had engaged in a secret discussion with an illegal gambler. The Speaker of Parliament today said that the Supreme Court has decided that the 18th amendment is consistent with the constitution of Sri Lanka. He added that the court also said that a 2/3rd majority in parliament is sufficient to pass the amendment.

United national Party (UNP) and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the party will not participate in the debate over the 18thAmendment to the Constitution. He said this while speaking in Parliament a short while ago.

The Emergency has been extended for another month without a vote in Parliament. Most Opposition members were not present in the House for a vote to be taken.

Gampaha District United National Party Upeksha Swarnamali, popularly known as Paba met President Mahinda Rajapaksa a short while ago and pledged to support the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, sources said a short while ago.

Every Parliamentarian is expected to cast his vote individually at the voting for the 18th amendment bill states Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana. He said this speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday .
Accordingly, every Parliamentarian would take an opportunity to express his consent for the bill independently he added.
Six UNPers formally cross the floor

Six UNP MPs, Abdul Cader, Earl Gunasekera, Upeksha Swarnamali, Nimal Wijesinghe, Lakshman Seneviratne and Manusha Nanayakkara crossed over to the Government side in Parliament a short while ago.
Earlier these United National Party members had stated that they would extend their support to the 18th Amendment to the Constitution while still sitting with the Opposition in Parliament.
UNP march 200 meters to protest against 18th amendment

UNP had organized an agitation to express their opposition against the18th amendment bill today. Protesting march which commenced at UNP Head Quarters “Sirikotha” moved about 200m up to Bangala Junction where they set fire to an effigy and a coffin. It is reported that a police officer’s uniform also caught fire. After that agitators returned to party Head Quarters and a protest was held opposite there. However none of the stalwarts of the UNP took part with this agitation say reports.

The 18th amendment to the constitution was passed in the Parliament states our reporter at the Parliament. 161 members have voted for the amendment and 18 voted against it. The UNP boycotted the proceedings today. However, 6 UNP members voted with the government.
